This door, as you will soon discover, is not the typical fare
that you might find on many a BBS. It is not a game. There are no
high scores. But it can make you or one of your BBS users an
extremely wealthy individual if you are fortunate enough to
discover the key which has eluded many individuals for more than a
century and a half.
In 1984 I wrote an article, titled Beale's Buried Treasure for
the Commodore specific magazine, RUN. It was published as the cover
article in August of that year amid a blaze of colorful artwork.
The article discussed the Beale Treasure and included a BASIC
program it assist would be treasure hunters in using their computer
to solve the encrypted messages left by Beale.
At the conclusion I offered to save individuals the ardors
task of entering the code by providing copies for $5 and a SASE.
The response was surprising and continued far beyond what one might
consider a reasonable time frame. As late as 1990 I was still
receiving requests, which, unfortunately I was unable to honor.
Some recent inquiries have prompted me to develop the basic
elements of the story of the treasure into a door program. The
results are now before you. A large part of the door provides
information about the treasure, such as Beale's correspondence, the
codes and some analytical information. The other areas allow you a
simplified approach to breaking the codes.
Is the story of the treasure true and does it really exist? I
honestly can not say for sure. Skeptics do exist and have offered
logical reasons that the entire story is a hoax. However, other
information also exists which lends much credibility to the entire
fantastic story.
The Beale Treasure is buried in Virginia, near Lynchburg. What
is buried is well known, as well as how it is buried and how it got
there in the first place. What no one has yet been able to
determine is exactly where it is buried, even though the
instructions are available!
True or not, the codes can be accessed through this door along
with information that provides an historical account of the
treasure. The door allows users of your BBS the chance to test
various number/letter substitutions. Perhaps with a bit of luck
they'll stumble upon the key. If so, perhaps they may remember you
and I will kindly with their new found wealth!
---===---
This door is released as Shareware. The only difference
between it and the registered version is that the registered
version allows the user to display the actual coded messages
(numbers one and three). Should you decide to register you will be
provided with a unique program to unlock these features for this
and any future releases of the door. What future releases, you ask?
Depending upon response I may add the capability to save substutied
values and recall these at a later time. Also I am always open to
enhancement suggestions. Should you decide not to register the door
you may freely continue to operate the unmodified shareware version
indefinately ... although a call to Santa Software Associates BBS
(412) 626-1788 or a note to me, Doug Nicklow directed to RIME node
SANTA with your thoughts would be appreciated.
Actual installation of the door is simple and full
instructions are contained within the sample batch file, beale.
Please insure that the files beale.dat and beale.ndx are contained
within the same directory as the door program, beale.exe, for
proper execution.
